Tip: What if it All Works Out?

Fear is more prevalent in our lives than we likely realize or want to admit. I don’t believe this is a mistake or something to feel negatively toward. Our brains are built for survival. At its foundation its job is to keep you alive and subsequently designed to assess and execute on anything that is seen as a precursor to survival. For example, safety.

Our brains determine how to handle certain stimuli from our environments at an early age. If we are not parented to arrive at more developed conclusions, our brains arrive somewhere limited by the current age of development. Neuropathways are paved that allow our brains to have a more automatic response to the same stimuli in the future. What this means is, however old we were when we formed that unparented response, is the age of maturity that we are operating in the world today in that area of our life.

This means for all of us, to varying degrees, our response to life in areas that lack healing is one of a scared child – and neuropathways that are limited to what has been developed.

The good news? We aren’t little kids anymore, and we can reparent those paths in our brain to do something different.

One of my favorite examples of this is the phrase – “what if it all turns out?”. I have this on my wall as a regular reminder that instead of doing my usual fear based response to life, I can challenge my brain to pave pathways that dabble in the possibilities, excitement, and hope of the matter. As you encounter future oriented fear – challenge your mind to think about what it might look like if it all works out. While there is no guarantee it will work out, there is equally no guarantee it won’t.  If your brain is trained to think with hope, hope will be easier to live in. So, no guarantees are given, but a hope filled life feels more like living than a fear filled one. Hope opens up your system to potential, instead of shutting it down like fear does. Try it. Who knows, it might turn out! 😉
